51°µÍø’s King Street East will be closed this Sunday, May 26, 2024, for the majority of the day for the city’s car-free street festival initiative.
The festival, called Open Streets 51°µÍø, will be held from 10AM to 2PM from John Street to Gage Avenue, but the street itself will be closed from 7AM until 4PM.
The street will be closed to vehicle traffic and only open for pedestrians, cyclists and the like.
The stretch of road involved spans 3.6 km and will feature various stations and other activities.
The move follows the city’s first Open Streets event on King Street East in June 2023, which the municipality says was attended by an estimated 15,000 individuals.
That event reportedly received positive feedback from residents, with 47 community organizations and 14 businesses registering in advance to participate while several others joined at the last minute.
Activity hubs along the route included pickleball, wheelchair basketball, 51°µÍø Bike Share ridges, e-scooter demonstrations, yoga, dancing, organized runs and bike rides, and Pilates on the street.
There are five activity hubs, including John Street, Wellington, Wentworth, Sherman, and Scott Park, each of which is a future LRT stop.
There are also two mini activation hubs located at Ferguson Station and Barnesdale Avenue.
A food court area will be located at Fairleigh Avenue.
51°µÍø city buses will be detoured westbound via Cannon Street.
A second Open Streets festival will be held on Sunday, June 23, 2024, from 10AM to 2PM.
LINC REPAIRS
In addition to the Open Streets festival, the Lincoln Alexander Parkway will be closed in both directions for the entire weekend, weather permitting, beginning on Friday, May 24 for the city’s annual maintenance work.
Eastbound lanes will be closed from Golf Links Road to the Upper Red Hill Valley Parkway from Friday, May 24 at 8AM until Monday, May 27 at 4AM.
Meanwhile, westbound lanes will be closed from the Red Hill Valley Parkway to Mohawk Road from Friday, May 24 at 10AM until Monday, May 27 at 4AM.
However, access to the Highway 403 on-ramps and the Rousseaux Street off ramp will be maintained with vehicles able to take the Mohawk Road on-ramp.
The city says that maintenance work includes spot resurfacing and asphalt repairs, sections of mill and pave, graffiti removal, bridge and signage repairs, pavement markings, ditching, catch basin cleaning, and vegetation maintenance.
A statement warns that traffic is expected to increase, particularly along other east-west routes, during the closure.
