So Your Student Didn’t Make Their Dream School

Updated: Apr 12, 2023

And it is all your fault for not being the perfect parent....

First step is… Set yourself free by forgiving yourself… No one is the perfect parent!

By holding on to regret and disappointment with yourself, you are punishing yourself and ultimately your child. Just like everyone else in the world, you have made mistakes as a parent, but you must be willing to forgive yourself.

Forgiving yourself is easy. You have everything to gain when you forgive yourself. You gain peace of mind, emotional freedom, and a new perspective on life.

Don’t buy into the belief that you had to be a perfect parent and that if you were perfect your child would be content, happy or been admitted into their Dream College. Mistakes are part of the game of life which is what we try to teach our children.

Parents are only human and accept that you made some mistakes and exercised poor judgement from time to time. We all do.. we worked away from home… we didn’t work…. We worked too much… We didn’t work enough… You know the self-talk that we have with ourselves.

Wisdom is learning from our mistakes and becoming a wiser version of ourselves each day. If…. we don’t get stuck in our destructive self-talk.

Forgive yourself and be willing to forgive others.

By forgiving yourself, you get closer and closer to releasing yourself from emotional bondage which allows you to be free to grow and develop fully.

By practicing the daily habit of self-forgiveness, you can move towards the ultimate goal of learning from your mistakes.

Most importantly, your child needs you to model and to help navigate and weather this disappointment.

Self-Reflection Questions:

  1. What are the three things you regret the most?

  2. What can you learn from those mistakes?

  3. How would you feel if you chose to forgive yourself for all of your mistakes?

  4. What is it costing you not to forgive yourself?

Happy Planning,
